Our Daily Bread, Part One: Breaking Fast at Boulettes Larder

I love San Francisco’s Ferry Building.  Love it.  I could live there.  In the bathroom, if I had to.

Ok not quite, but this place alone could sustain me for a few weeks without exhausting my appetite.  In addition to the jaw-dropping farmer’s market and food shops, there are many great eateries.  This trip, we went to three different places at the Ferry Building for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For breakfast, Boulettes Larder is on my Requisite Places to Eat Whenever I Visit SF list.  Aside from selling an interesting inventory of foods from farro and salted capers to cannelles and raw honeycomb, this small shop also serves a breakfast, brunch and lunch out of its open kitchen.  The menu changes daily, utilizing local, high-quality ingredients gathered from the farmer’s market.*  Between pork belly, sardines and nettles, this place offers up some unique morning fare.

On a sunny, Monday morning, I ordered some eggs with tomato panzanella and pesto.  Wonderful.  The sweetest cherry tomatoes, fresh herbs and crunchy croutons accompanied these perfectly poached, farm-fresh eggs.  A little bit on the heartier side, but perfect for a late breakfast.

We also shared some toasted breads.  This was not your typical side of white, whole wheat or rye.  This was TOAST, an assortment of breads to surpass all other breakfast accoutrements that often resemble roof shingles.  Selected Acme artisan breads were served with a ramekin of sweet butter and organic Italian fruit jam.  Our apricot jam was uncharacteristically not sweet and tasted like, well, real fruit.  How nice for a change.

My husband ordered some yogurt with berries after his main course, and I have to say, I can’t remember tasting yogurt like this anywhere else.  I’m guessing that it had to be housemade, as it tasted so fresh and the consistency was a lot looser than store-bought yogurts.  Somewhat tangy, like goat’s milk, and gorgeous.  Of course, the berries were fresh and sweet, bright red to their cores.

And what would breakfast be without coffee?  To properly wash everything down, a French press of blue bottle three african beans coffee answered our caffeine call.  Medium-bodied with a full, bright flavor, this morning beverage was the perfect pick-me-up.

I know I’ve said this a billion times already, but I can’t wait to go back to San Francisco, even if it is just for breakfast.

*There is no food service on Saturdays.  But there is the huge farmer’s market which has several stands serving amazing food!
